North Stradbroke Island
-
- Picturesque North
Stradbroke Island is an enticing blend of rugged coastal landscape, tranquil
inland lakes, and pristine beaches just one hour from Brisbane.
One of the world's largest sand islands, it is situated at the southern end
of Moreton Bay and is easily accessible by vehicle ferry ("barge") and water
taxi from Cleveland.
North Stradbroke Island has some of the most spectacular scenery found in
Queensland. White sandy beaches stretch into an endless horizon fringed by
the aqua blue ocean, while a system of freshwater lakes in the island's
centre provides beautiful picnic and swimming spots.
The three townships of Dunwich, Amity and Point Lookout
still have a village atmosphere but offer a range of accommodation to
suit all budgets, not to mention a variety of cafés and restaurants.
North Stradbroke Island .....where summer never ends

Visit the township of Dunwich
The ferries, barges and water taxis from the mainland arrive
at Dunwich on the western side of North Stradbroke Island.
Swim and lunch in the safe swimming beach.
Dunwich has a small shopping area, doctor, chemist, bakery,
coffee shop, bottle shop, supermarket, newsagents, aboriginal
artifacts shop.
One of the most interesting areas of Dunwich is the cemetery
(listed by the National Trust) which has graves which date from
as early as 1847. It was the burial site for the 42 typhus victims
who arrived aboard the Emigrant in 1849 and were quarantined
on the island. The graves include both those of Dr George Mitchell
and Dr David Bellow, the ship's doctor and the local surgeon.
The cemetery is now one of the few reminders of the early settlement
which was established at Dunwich.
